Magnolia tree losing leaves?

I have about a 40 foot magnolia tree in my yard, I don't know the specific variety. It's currently blooming, but losing a lot of leaves. (I'm raking up a trash bag full every week.) I live in South Mississippi, so climate shouldn't be an issue (they're native here.) It's getting plenty of water, and I have some fertilizer spikes I just put in along the dripline. I'm a notorious plant killer, so it's making me nervous. :)





Is it normal for a blooming tree to lose leaves in early summer? Or should I be worried about the number of woodpeckers that come to my bird feeder?

A serious question, I'm sure, but the answer has to be a resounding "NO" if you are asking about the Magnolia Grandiflora. Just about its only negative characteristic is the fact that the leaves seem to fall all year long and blow all over the lawn. In truth, they fall more at certain times of the year, one of which is the time when it is blooming. Most men who usually do most of the mowing of lawns hate the magnolias; I think one of the reasons the Grandiflora leaves are so bothersome is that they are thick, tough, large and slow to decompose. When you rake them, they take up lots of space in a bag or trash can.





The leaves fall off along the branches as the new growth comes on. Looking underneath, or inside a magnolia tree, you see lots of branches that are bare except for at the ends. Its just the natural process of the tree's growth. So, if your tree is losing a tremendous amount of leaves, especially in the spring, that is normal. They have to fall off to make room for new leaves.





Also, an unusually dry season will will cause the tree to lose leaves; even cause them to drop a year after the dry year because the tree was damaged from drought.

If you're meaning the chinese mongolia? The tree is unsafe for birds but I have no idea about the fruit. I have never seen the fruit on any parrot safe lists.

Bose is really not in the same league of the brands they sell at Magnolia section of Best Buy. Def Tech, Vienna Acoutics, Klipsch are upper mid-line in regard to quality speakers and much better products. You can buy these speakers for often a few hundred dollars more and have a far better performing audio experience.



Bose is really marketing genius in some regards. But when it really comes down to real sound, most audiophiles seldom consider there products.
Reply:Bose speakers are horrible for the money. You can spend 1/4 of the cost and get much better sound. Yes Bose pays extra for their demo's to be put by themselves. They want us employees to really focus on their product. The problem is anyone that honestly loves why they do won't sell you Bose. No highs, no lows it must be bose... Martin Logan's blow away Bose, and so does the rest of our Magnolia products. Dr. Bose charges a lot of money for his products so he can save money and donate it to MIT and get a building named after him... They are the biggest rip off company ever. Marketing genius I have to give them that but they are just taking advantage of the public at this point.

What type of home theater are you looking to install, a dedicated home theater or just hanging a plasma on the wall. These two stores really don't have people that are very experienced in this field. These services just run wires and plug in your system, an easy job to do if you read the manual. Let us know what you are lookin to do or email me and I am sure we can walk you through it. Saving you money and patience.
Reply:Don't use either of them, they are a sorry excuse for installers. Don't go to a frigging electrical contractor or builder either. Go to CEDIA website and they can refer a contractor in your area that will fix you up.





P.S. If you don't know what you are doing then don't do it yourself. It will only cost you more in the end.
Reply:Not advisable the techs are under qualified, you may get lucky. But I advise using a home builder or electrical company that has a specialized division. You may spend more but the specialized electricians they have will be a great asset and the install will be the best possible. The premium price that BB and CC charge is not worth what you get.
Reply:In my opinion both of these stores are overpriced and overrated. Heck, I think BB charges a couple hundred bucks just to program your remote.





I personally would look at installing it yourself, or maybe find a buddy who can help. The hardest part is installing the wiring, but other than that it's not all that difficult.

I just planted five little gem magnolias around my yard about 2 weeks ago. Now they are all brown with very few green leaves left. I mixed the soil with peat and manure and also planttone and have been keeping it on a regular watering schedule. Also, I have planted several other plants including rhods and azaleas and they are doing fine. Now, the reason I think it is transplant shock is when I planted them I only had time to do three first then I waited a couple days to do the other two. When I planted the other two I noticed the ones in the containers looked beautiful but the ones in the ground were starting to wilt. What should I do!? These are mature plants the came from 15 gallon containers.

you should be able to see the trunk getting slightly wider at the bottom before it reaches the soil if it is the same width at soil level and a foot or so above it has been planted too deeply. remove this soil.








If that's not the problem then water them really deeply (don't fertilize)and hope for the best, wilting is not dying, but once trees reach the death spiral they don't recover.
Reply:You shouldn't plant trees in the summer. The best time to plant is fall or winter. I tried the same thing once and had the exact same problem. Some plants are more susceptible to this than others. Wish I could help you figure out what to do. Call the nursery you bought them from and ask for advice. If they sold you the trees, the least they could do is help you salvage them.

Reply:Pare it's not at all convincing. Look at how Arwind Santos dominated Seigle, Eman and Villanueva in the first half. If Air 21 had that kind of depth they would have run through this team from start to finish. It's not the kind of thing (slow start) you expect from one of the best teams. What if they do that to let's say Talk n' Text of Ginebra? They would have lost the game. They should have come out with more intensity at the start of the game.

Why has the beautiful white blossom on my magnolia tree gone brown overnight?

I'm afraid it's because of the cold weather and strong winds.

Magnolias don't normally flower quite this early but the very mild Winter has brought them into flower and the latest bout of cold weather has killed them. They won't recover this year but you should have a good display next year. If you have some unopened buds, you may just have a few late blooms.

Reply:Because it was pollinated, completing the first stage of its flowerly duty, seeds will follow. Natural progression of propagation of its species.
Reply:They do this when it too cold for them. BEcause of the extra warm weather they hav blossomed early and now the cold has got to them.

My mother recently commanded me to dump three loads of mulched magnolia leaves into our horses pasture. We argued(of course) and I keeped saying that it was a wast of time and magnolia leaves won't grow anything. She says that is will. Who is right?! Easy 10 points!!

It would help me if I knew which USDA hardiness zone you were in, and/or what sort of Magnolia.





Here in the tundric regions of zone 5, we have some Magnolias which are not much more than glorified shrubs, but we also have tree forms.





If the plant is young, and can be handled (at 3years, you probably can), I'd move it. It might not lift the concrete, but when the branches reach out 10' from where they are, will you be able to use the drive? If you cut them back, it won't have (many) flowers on that side... and the overall look will be compromised.





If it is a tree form, I believe that it could damage the asphalt.





Do it in the fall, as the tree begins to go dormant.

Reply:It could happen. Be sure to water deeply. But surface roots do happen with magnolias.





Its not a terrible thing to have to adjust pavement for a nice tree.

Reply:It is possible, make sure it is getting enough water so it's roots don't have to come up to find water, I run a hose at a medium trickle for two hours every other day ( when dry out) to let the water soak down to the roots so they don't come up.

If it is still small, you should have no trouble as long as you get the root ball or main root. Dig 2 foot out from trunk and down to get main root. Place in burlap or heavy paper sack with the dirt that came with roots. Transplant asap ensuring all air is out of hole. DON'T let roots dry out and keep out of sun.

Well you obviously don't live in Ontario Canada because right now you wouldn't know where your magnolia tree is !!





Am not sure of the rules of purchase are where you live. Better find out from the real estate agent whether you are permitted to take the tree. Also, this is probably the wrong time of year to be transplanting anything (also dependent on where you live).

Reply:I suggest that you don't and purchase/plant a new one this spring. This is a dicey move and if your tree dies -which they often do esp. in off season transplants - you will be very sad. Leave it in its home (but if you do insist on moving it make sure that you inform the buyers of the home and that it is in your contract, because they may consider that tree part of the purchase)
Reply:I have moved 5 times in the past 10 years and bring several of my perennials and trees(if still young) with me along the way, however when they get big and established I wouldn't risk killing them. I am also moving this winter, I actually took out all my favorite or rarer plants before frost though and left no sign of them for the real estate showings. Maybe you could include an addendum in the contract that you'd like to come back and get it in the spring.

It's unlikely you'll get anything at all the first year. Forsythias don't "flower" in the conventional manner, but the buds turn a bright yellow before they fall off and expose the green leaves. They are generally the first of spring. If you already have lots of green leaves, then the bright yellow buds have already fallen off for the season. Your magnolia may have suffered a bit of shock in the planting process and you may have to just wait a year before you get the first blooms.



Sorry you won't get the color you want this year but I you have great taste in plants! Those are two of my favorites.

Might be a little early for the magnolia, or it could take a couple of years to bloom, depending on the size and age of the tree.

A tip: don't put ravishing. Get rid of that. We don't want general descriptions telling us WHAT to think. We want to see the things that make us THINK it's beautiful. Put something about the sunlight filtering through the leafy branches, or the shadows playing amongst the fluttering leaves. Make the cardinals flit in and out of the branches. And be sure to add a little about fragrance, breezes, and whatnot. Remember to give something for each of the senses! (Hearing, Smelling, Touch, Sight, etcc)



And...nests don't fly. I'm sorry, but 'tis true.

Does it wipe off? Then wipe it off.



If it doesn't wipe off, it may be powdery mildew. There are different preventative steps you can take to keep it from spreading, and to prevent it from happening again next year, but there's not much you can do about the leaves already affected.



When the leaves drop, rake them up and take them away for hygiene.

I used to work at a greenhouse and this is a fungus and we used 3 parts water to 1 part Dawn Dish Soap, this contains a small amount of ammonia and other ingredients that kills this.
Reply:I have found that the best cure for powdery mildew is sulfur wettable powder, with just a dab of liquid detergent in the sprayer as a wetting agent. It won't cure the old growth, but will keep the new growth from getting infected. Spray in anticipation of rain, thats when the mildew spores travel.

Is it powdery mildew ? looks just like white mold. Home remedy that worked on my plants (roses, ivy) was to add (really) fresh coffee grounds watered in with beer. (not kidding had tried pruning and destroying the debris, but mold came back until coffee and beer!!)



If you have any kind of sprayer you can mix equal parts of water and beer and add 3 Tbs Murphy's Oil Soap (galon mixture) to spray on your plant babies.

Water will dramatically effect the growth rate of any tree. Also, with Magnolias, allow plenty of room for their roots to grow. They grow on the surface so keep that in mind. Otherwise they will loose limbs and not be nearly as healthy. I have about 20 in my yard.

Magnolia is a medium density wood. When dry it is a good firewood. It has no peculiar smell when burning. Two years ago I felled, bucked and split a 60+ year old Magnolia Grandiflora that was threatening to crash onto a friend's house. She uses wood heat and was very satisfied with the wood. Ash and heat content is similar to Douglas Fir.

good firewood is from the big limbs of Ash, Maple, Oak, Birch..(any of the Hardwood trees)...then the limbs have to be cut to length and split and seasoned at least 18 months to be dried out enough where it will throw off some decent heat and not just burn and "sizzle" The trunks of these trees go for lumber. and the leftoverbranches are firewood.
