I have about a 40 foot magnolia tree in my yard, I don't know the specific variety. It's currently blooming, but losing a lot of leaves. (I'm raking up a trash bag full every week.) I live in South Mississippi, so climate shouldn't be an issue (they're native here.) It's getting plenty of water, and I have some fertilizer spikes I just put in along the dripline. I'm a notorious plant killer, so it's making me nervous. :)
Is it normal for a blooming tree to lose leaves in early summer? Or should I be worried about the number of woodpeckers that come to my bird feeder?
Magnolia tree losing leaves?
A serious question, I'm sure, but the answer has to be a resounding "NO" if you are asking about the Magnolia Grandiflora. Just about its only negative characteristic is the fact that the leaves seem to fall all year long and blow all over the lawn. In truth, they fall more at certain times of the year, one of which is the time when it is blooming. Most men who usually do most of the mowing of lawns hate the magnolias; I think one of the reasons the Grandiflora leaves are so bothersome is that they are thick, tough, large and slow to decompose. When you rake them, they take up lots of space in a bag or trash can.
The leaves fall off along the branches as the new growth comes on. Looking underneath, or inside a magnolia tree, you see lots of branches that are bare except for at the ends. Its just the natural process of the tree's growth. So, if your tree is losing a tremendous amount of leaves, especially in the spring, that is normal. They have to fall off to make room for new leaves.
Also, an unusually dry season will will cause the tree to lose leaves; even cause them to drop a year after the dry year because the tree was damaged from drought.
SO, DON"T WORRY ABOUT UR GRANDIFLORA..... IT"S PERFECTLY FINE.
Reply:I'm having the same problem. Mine seems to be coming back / putting on a lot of new growth, but I'm still pretty concerned. Hope you get a good answer. I starred the question so i can keep checking.

Have you ever been to magnolia home theater?
i went there today to check out some speakers and i noticed that the bose speakers were noware near anyother speaker. I asked the salesman why and he said that bose paid extra money for that spot away from the other speakers. is this the same at your magnolia home theater

Bose is really not in the same league of the brands they sell at Magnolia section of Best Buy. Def Tech, Vienna Acoutics, Klipsch are upper mid-line in regard to quality speakers and much better products. You can buy these speakers for often a few hundred dollars more and have a far better performing audio experience.
Bose is really marketing genius in some regards. But when it really comes down to real sound, most audiophiles seldom consider there products.
Reply:Bose speakers are horrible for the money. You can spend 1/4 of the cost and get much better sound. Yes Bose pays extra for their demo's to be put by themselves. They want us employees to really focus on their product. The problem is anyone that honestly loves why they do won't sell you Bose. No highs, no lows it must be bose... Martin Logan's blow away Bose, and so does the rest of our Magnolia products. Dr. Bose charges a lot of money for his products so he can save money and donate it to MIT and get a building named after him... They are the biggest rip off company ever. Marketing genius I have to give them that but they are just taking advantage of the public at this point.
Reply:Bose knows if it mixes with ANY other brand of speaker for a FAIR comparison of sound quality, the Bose would ALWAYS loose...That's why they PAY to be separate...Bose is the one of the BIGGEST lies in the Home Theater industry.

Has anyone used Firedog(Circuit City) or Magnolia (Best Buy) to install a home theater system?
Could you please provide feedback as to the level of service you received using either of the two.
Has anyone used Firedog(Circuit City) or Magnolia (Best Buy) to install a home theater system?
What type of home theater are you looking to install, a dedicated home theater or just hanging a plasma on the wall. These two stores really don't have people that are very experienced in this field. These services just run wires and plug in your system, an easy job to do if you read the manual. Let us know what you are lookin to do or email me and I am sure we can walk you through it. Saving you money and patience.
Reply:Don't use either of them, they are a sorry excuse for installers. Don't go to a frigging electrical contractor or builder either. Go to CEDIA website and they can refer a contractor in your area that will fix you up.
P.S. If you don't know what you are doing then don't do it yourself. It will only cost you more in the end.
Reply:Not advisable the techs are under qualified, you may get lucky. But I advise using a home builder or electrical company that has a specialized division. You may spend more but the specialized electricians they have will be a great asset and the install will be the best possible. The premium price that BB and CC charge is not worth what you get.
Reply:In my opinion both of these stores are overpriced and overrated. Heck, I think BB charges a couple hundred bucks just to program your remote.
I personally would look at installing it yourself, or maybe find a buddy who can help. The hardest part is installing the wiring, but other than that it's not all that difficult.

Little gem Magnolia dying after planting, transplant shock or what?>?
I just planted five little gem magnolias around my yard about 2 weeks ago. Now they are all brown with very few green leaves left. I mixed the soil with peat and manure and also planttone and have been keeping it on a regular watering schedule. Also, I have planted several other plants including rhods and azaleas and they are doing fine. Now, the reason I think it is transplant shock is when I planted them I only had time to do three first then I waited a couple days to do the other two. When I planted the other two I noticed the ones in the containers looked beautiful but the ones in the ground were starting to wilt. What should I do!? These are mature plants the came from 15 gallon containers.
Little gem Magnolia dying after planting, transplant shock or what?%26gt;?
did you plant too deep?
you should be able to see the trunk getting slightly wider at the bottom before it reaches the soil if it is the same width at soil level and a foot or so above it has been planted too deeply. remove this soil.
If that's not the problem then water them really deeply (don't fertilize)and hope for the best, wilting is not dying, but once trees reach the death spiral they don't recover.
Reply:You shouldn't plant trees in the summer. The best time to plant is fall or winter. I tried the same thing once and had the exact same problem. Some plants are more susceptible to this than others. Wish I could help you figure out what to do. Call the nursery you bought them from and ask for advice. If they sold you the trees, the least they could do is help you salvage them.

superb! team to beat!

Why has the beautiful white blossom on my magnolia tree gone brown overnight?
I'm afraid it's because of the cold weather and strong winds.
Magnolias don't normally flower quite this early but the very mild Winter has brought them into flower and the latest bout of cold weather has killed them. They won't recover this year but you should have a good display next year. If you have some unopened buds, you may just have a few late blooms.
Why has the beautiful white blossom on my magnolia tree gone brown overnight?
just likely to be frost damage it will not damage the plant long term, it always seems to happen its either wind or frost that gets magnolis flowerrs
Reply:Because it was pollinated, completing the first stage of its flowerly duty, seeds will follow. Natural progression of propagation of its species.
Reply:They do this when it too cold for them. BEcause of the extra warm weather they hav blossomed early and now the cold has got to them.
Reply:To much sun and lack of moisture try spraying /hosing the tree when the weather has cooled down.
Reply:Johny is correct it's frost damage due to the late cold snap.
Reply:They don't hold their flowers very long. Mine does the exact same thing. It'll bloom again. Bye

Is mulched magnolia leavesgood fertilizer? Is it deadly to horses?
My mother recently commanded me to dump three loads of mulched magnolia leaves into our horses pasture. We argued(of course) and I keeped saying that it was a wast of time and magnolia leaves won't grow anything. She says that is will. Who is right?! Easy 10 points!!

Will my Magnolia tree roots lift my drive way and patio?
My tree is about 2 feet away from my assfault drive way and one foot away from my concreat patio. The tree is about 3 years old. I would really like to keep it where it is.
Will my Magnolia tree roots lift my drive way and patio?
It would help me if I knew which USDA hardiness zone you were in, and/or what sort of Magnolia.
Here in the tundric regions of zone 5, we have some Magnolias which are not much more than glorified shrubs, but we also have tree forms.
If the plant is young, and can be handled (at 3years, you probably can), I'd move it. It might not lift the concrete, but when the branches reach out 10' from where they are, will you be able to use the drive? If you cut them back, it won't have (many) flowers on that side... and the overall look will be compromised.
If it is a tree form, I believe that it could damage the asphalt.
Do it in the fall, as the tree begins to go dormant.
I hope that this helps
Good luck
Reply:It could happen. Be sure to water deeply. But surface roots do happen with magnolias.
Its not a terrible thing to have to adjust pavement for a nice tree.
Reply:yes
Reply:It is possible, make sure it is getting enough water so it's roots don't have to come up to find water, I run a hose at a medium trickle for two hours every other day ( when dry out) to let the water soak down to the roots so they don't come up.

I am moving house after Christmas and want to take my magnolia tree with me. Any suggestions?
If it is still small, you should have no trouble as long as you get the root ball or main root. Dig 2 foot out from trunk and down to get main root. Place in burlap or heavy paper sack with the dirt that came with roots. Transplant asap ensuring all air is out of hole. DON'T let roots dry out and keep out of sun.

Well you obviously don't live in Ontario Canada because right now you wouldn't know where your magnolia tree is !!
Am not sure of the rules of purchase are where you live. Better find out from the real estate agent whether you are permitted to take the tree. Also, this is probably the wrong time of year to be transplanting anything (also dependent on where you live).
Reply:Yeh !!!!
Dont do it---its classed as a fixture.
you could find yourself getting a letter from your buyers attorney
Reply:I suggest that you don't and purchase/plant a new one this spring. This is a dicey move and if your tree dies -which they often do esp. in off season transplants - you will be very sad. Leave it in its home (but if you do insist on moving it make sure that you inform the buyers of the home and that it is in your contract, because they may consider that tree part of the purchase)
Reply:I have moved 5 times in the past 10 years and bring several of my perennials and trees(if still young) with me along the way, however when they get big and established I wouldn't risk killing them. I am also moving this winter, I actually took out all my favorite or rarer plants before frost though and left no sign of them for the real estate showings. Maybe you could include an addendum in the contract that you'd like to come back and get it in the spring.
Reply:Leave it where it is.A magnolia wouldn't transplant very well anyway, but as someone said you could get into trouble unless you told the new owners you were taking it

I planted a magnolia bush and forsythia a few weeks ago and they have a ton of green leaves but no flowers?
It's unlikely you'll get anything at all the first year. Forsythias don't "flower" in the conventional manner, but the buds turn a bright yellow before they fall off and expose the green leaves. They are generally the first of spring. If you already have lots of green leaves, then the bright yellow buds have already fallen off for the season. Your magnolia may have suffered a bit of shock in the planting process and you may have to just wait a year before you get the first blooms.
Sorry you won't get the color you want this year but I you have great taste in plants! Those are two of my favorites.
I planted a magnolia bush and forsythia a few weeks ago and they have a ton of green leaves but no flowers?
Once forsythia have leaves, they will not bloom again until the following spring.
Might be a little early for the magnolia, or it could take a couple of years to bloom, depending on the size and age of the tree.

A beautiful way to describe a magnolia tree?
For my english paper, i am trying to think of a way to describe the magnolia tree with pink flowers in front of a beautiful victorian house. the tree could also have yellow flowers if you can describe that.
Additional Details:
A ravishing magnolia tree sways in the summer breeze, a nest of red cardinals fluttering into and out of its branches.
Description of a magnolia tree? Anybody here a creative writer?
A tip: don't put ravishing. Get rid of that. We don't want general descriptions telling us WHAT to think. We want to see the things that make us THINK it's beautiful. Put something about the sunlight filtering through the leafy branches, or the shadows playing amongst the fluttering leaves. Make the cardinals flit in and out of the branches. And be sure to add a little about fragrance, breezes, and whatnot. Remember to give something for each of the senses! (Hearing, Smelling, Touch, Sight, etcc)
And...nests don't fly. I'm sorry, but 'tis true.
Good luck!

I have a Japanese Magnolia, there is a dusty grey flim on the leaves, how do I get it off ?
Does it wipe off? Then wipe it off.
If it doesn't wipe off, it may be powdery mildew. There are different preventative steps you can take to keep it from spreading, and to prevent it from happening again next year, but there's not much you can do about the leaves already affected.
When the leaves drop, rake them up and take them away for hygiene.
I have a Japanese Magnolia, there is a dusty grey flim on the leaves, how do I get it off ?
I used to work at a greenhouse and this is a fungus and we used 3 parts water to 1 part Dawn Dish Soap, this contains a small amount of ammonia and other ingredients that kills this.
Reply:I have found that the best cure for powdery mildew is sulfur wettable powder, with just a dab of liquid detergent in the sprayer as a wetting agent. It won't cure the old growth, but will keep the new growth from getting infected. Spray in anticipation of rain, thats when the mildew spores travel.
Reply:Nothing but luke warm water with a little dishsoap!!!...LATER
Reply:Is it just vehicle exhaust ? that can be wiped off or hosed off.
Is it powdery mildew ? looks just like white mold. Home remedy that worked on my plants (roses, ivy) was to add (really) fresh coffee grounds watered in with beer. (not kidding had tried pruning and destroying the debris, but mold came back until coffee and beer!!)
If you have any kind of sprayer you can mix equal parts of water and beer and add 3 Tbs Murphy's Oil Soap (galon mixture) to spray on your plant babies.
Good luck

How fast do magnolia WADA's trees grow?
Water will dramatically effect the growth rate of any tree. Also, with Magnolias, allow plenty of room for their roots to grow. They grow on the surface so keep that in mind. Otherwise they will loose limbs and not be nearly as healthy. I have about 20 in my yard.
How fast do magnolia WADA's trees grow?
They are generally slow growing we have had our for about 20 years and it is approx 18ft tall 10ft spread.

Are magnolia trees good for firewood?
Magnolia is a medium density wood. When dry it is a good firewood. It has no peculiar smell when burning. Two years ago I felled, bucked and split a 60+ year old Magnolia Grandiflora that was threatening to crash onto a friend's house. She uses wood heat and was very satisfied with the wood. Ash and heat content is similar to Douglas Fir.
Are magnolia trees good for firewood?
you can use it but it;s not that good. it is knowen as goffer wood ,you put a piece on the fire and goffer another one.
Reply:no
Reply:Not at all. If you want a good firewood you must look for dried twigs from old trees. Whatever kind of tree so long as it is truly dried. It will make you a good fire.
Reply:good for a campfire..... not keep you warm in the winter woodstove or fireplace firewood.....TWIGS?....again, campfire....
good firewood is from the big limbs of Ash, Maple, Oak, Birch..(any of the Hardwood trees)...then the limbs have to be cut to length and split and seasoned at least 18 months to be dried out enough where it will throw off some decent heat and not just burn and "sizzle" The trunks of these trees go for lumber. and the leftoverbranches are firewood.

could you down load a picture of a magnolia? There are lots of gardening web sites -
I believe - they are a small white blossom - my sister would float them in water in a shallow vase - and put them in the guest room where I was staying - I loved it - and now the fragrance always reminds me of her.
but it is definitely white.

Star Magnolia Bush Problems?
I have a Star Magnolia bush, installed 3 years ago, and there are entire branches were the leaves are drying out and turning brown. It has not been abnormally hot or dry. This has not happened before. Any ideas.
I have been pulling the leaves off, but not the branches, as they are still green inside.
Thanks.
Star Magnolia Bush Problems?
Star Magnolia are quite pest free, though they can be affected by several problems. One problem common to Star Magnolia is root girdling (circling roots). Though this could be your problem, the symptoms you describe do not exactly fit.
Sometimes Star Magnolia can be infected with a canker. This fungal infestation causes dark sunken areas on the stems and branches, eventually girdling the stem and branch and results in death of the stem or branch. Look for these darken sunken areas on the branched affected on your tree.
Another possibility is verticillium wilt. This soil borne fungal disease enters the roots and propagates in the vascular system of the tree. A common symptom is leaves will start to brown on whole branches. If you have verticllium wilt, you should be able to see a light- to dark-green streaking of the sapwood when viewed on an infected branch with the bark peeled away. If the branch or plant is cut and the cross section examined, the discoloration may appear as a ring. The vascular discoloring often occurs with the advance of the fungus or the fungal spores through the sapwood except sometimes in the early stages of infection.
Although some plants may die quickly, more commonly it takes one or more years to die. Trees and shrubs with only a few wilted branches during a growing season may become more severely infected the following year. Some may recover and show no more symptoms in the following years. In other cases, the plant may develop symptoms several years later after the initial infection.
What can you do for veticillium wilt? Avoid root and collar injury. Keep your magnolia vigorous. Trees and shrubs killed by Verticillium wilt should be removed with as much of the roots intact as possible. Plants showing early symptoms should be watered and fertilized. Use fertilizers lower in nitrogen and higher in potassium. Sterilize tools between pruning and removal of infected plants and pruning healthy plants. Allow several years (three or more) before growing a susceptible plant in an infected area. Do not plant back into the same hole! There are no proven cures (chemical or cultural) for this disease.

Is the magnolia tree also a bush?
Yes, there are magnolias which grow as shrubs, and some which are tree sized and formed. There are about 125 different varieties of magnolia, with a wide range of growth habit and flower form and color.
Is the magnolia tree also a bush?
Yes, it can be a bush or a tree, depending on growing conditions.
Difference between bush %26amp; tree is number of branches and height. Magnolia can be either, according to wikipedia.

It is a bush no matter how big it gets .
Reply:In Calif, there are Southern Magnolias-Magnolia grandiflora that are evergreen and grow to about 40 feet tall and always have a single trunk. There are also Chinese Magnolias- Magnolia soulangeana are deciduous trees that can be kept about lowest roof height(10-15ft) or taller and most often are multi-trunked looking like a large bush. I would not consider Magnolias a bush.

Is it advisable to relocate a large magnolia soulangeana If so when and how do I do it?
We had one many years ago we offered it to a local arbouretum (excuse spelling) as it was too big for the garden. They came and dug the biggest hole around the roots you could imagine and took it away as far as I know some 12 years later its still growing strong.
Make sure you have the hole ready for it well watered and manure or feed in there. Dig around the roots but make sure you don't hit the roots and hopefully it will like its new home. Not sure how big yours is but ours was about 6 foot and it needed 4 men to move it.

not much pruning required cut any limbs that grow back tward the trunk and cut the shoots that might grow srtaight up in the air they are messy trees (nickname trash tree) but pretty
How do I prune a magnolia tree?
i usually take a chain saw the the base and zip right through, prunes them right up
Reply:wait until the cold season (jan - mar here in the PNW)
Then cut to the base (not completely flat but do not leave a stub) any dead diseased or damaged branches and anything that crosses and rubs. Remember to leave the tree with balanced numbers of branches on both sides if at all possible and prune less rather than more -remember the leaves are the tree's food source so you can't cut out more than 25% at one time (that may mean you can only cut one (healthy)branch this year)if more than 25% needs to be cut out prune a bit this yea and prune to reat next year. Hope this helps.

Is Jane Magnolia same as Japanese Magnolia?
If not, what's the different?
Is Jane Magnolia same as Japanese Magnolia?
No, they are different varieties.
The Japanese Magnoila is related to the widely popular Saucer Magnolia - being the male parent.
"Jane" is a hybrid of the Japanese Magnolia (along with the whole series collectively know as "The Girls". - including Rikki, Alexandrina, and others)
Jane will not get as big as the original parent plant (maybe 10-12'). And the flowers are generally more purplish - whereas the original has more white in the flower (white %26amp; pink, or white %26amp; purple)
Edited to add - I suppose since the Japanese Magnolia is one of "Jane" ancestors, you could called them related.
Reply:Also with the "little girl" hybrids, you will get a second bloom later in the summer, it will not be as prolific as the first bloom,,,,but you will certainly get another blooming period out of Jane and Ann.
Reply:As Cat said they are related, but one incredibly important difference is the ability of the named hybrids to withstand temperature extremes, especially cold. I had a large Saucer magnolia die from a late freeze last year, and several others severely damaged, while all of the "girls" came through with only some tip dieback.

Magnolia trees Can I use Epson Salts to use as a fertilizer around our Magnolia tree?
Yes. Apply one pound of epsom salts for every ten feet of branch spread and mulch with manure/compost and water thoroughly, or apply 2 tablespoons per 9 square feet. Apply over the root area/zone about 3 times annually.
Epsom salt doesn't "built up" in the soil after long periods of use like chemical fertilizers so it can't be overused.
Magnesium and sulfur are the two major components of Epsom salt.
Magnesium is critical for seed germination and the production of chlorophyll, fruit, and nuts. Magnesium helps strengthen cell walls and improves plants' uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur.
Don't let the word "salt" scare you off. You aren't going to "salt the earth" and kill your plants. Epsom salts have looooong been used as fertilizers for various plants and trees.

What is a July Magnolia... tree, bush or what?
I won a 15 gallon July Magnolia. It has been on my patio in the same plastic container it came in, since April. I have no idea where to plant it or what care it needs. I went on the internet, but nothing came up for a "July Magnolia". Can you give me any information, please?
What is a July Magnolia... tree, bush or what?
I found a link for the Magnolia Society (below) with an email link...maybe they can help you sort it out.
If that doesn't work maybe a nursery in your area would be helpful.
Good luck to you :)
Reply:It's a trade name for another species that is not a magnolia at all. It's maybe a gardenia or camellia. It's a great idea to look for a scientific name of a plant on the plant tag. Scientific names are those long names that are sometimes hard to pronounce but are worth the trouble to know what exact plant you are getting. It is often italicized.

When is the best time to prune a magnolia tree?
Prune your magnolia tree after it has bloomed, in the early summer. Be careful when pruning. Magnolias may not always respond well to pruning because the wounds created by pruning do not heal easily. You must remove all dead and diseased wood, as well as suckers and water sprouts. Other than this necessary pruning, let the tree grow with its natural shape and avoid any unnecessary pruning.
When is the best time to prune a magnolia tree?
Magnolias are not deciduous so there really isn't a good time or a bad time to prune them.
Reply:You don't - they don't like it at all. Just carefully remove dead or broken branches. Mine - 20ft tall - is in flower and is simple looking magnificent.
Reply:prune late winter when the tree is more dormant
Reply:Prune the dead branches for sure. Leave the lower branches because they protect the roots which can be burned by the sun. First the leaves will start to fall (mine are now) as the food from the tree goes to produce blooms. Wait until winter if you can to prune live wood because the sap is not running as much and the plant will have time to gently adapt. Feed magnolias and water them in the summer. Cut any roots that are crossing over others. They can strangle the tree.
Good luck.

Does anyone know how to get rid of flies and bees in a Magnolia tree?
Depends on what they're doing- if you have bees living in the tree, then contact your ag extension folks for a list of local beekeepers- one of them can probably remove the swarm from the tree for you, and would be happy to do so for free, given how much bees cost these days.
If you're upset about the bees feeding on flowers (though I didnt' think bees could feed from magnolias), then your solutions are either to cut off all the flowers, just cut the tree down, or get yourself one of the more exotic magnolia trees which has a longer flower stem (some of the Japanese varieties work)- Honeybees have short tongues and if they can't get at the flower, they'll leave the tree alone..

as long as you have a flowering plant, you need bees to pollinate the flowers. Flies are attracted to the sweet flowers. If you spray for flies, you will kill the 'good' bees. I f the bees are huge in number %26amp; are forming a hive, you need to call a bee keeper to come %26amp; get them. You'll find them in the yellow pages. Otherwise - cut down the tree!

Help the deer at my tulips magnolia tree and just about everything in my garden!?
I have motion lights spot lights lighting the yard every were but thier feeding troft and that always seemed to work eccept this year. any one have any tips
Help the deer at my tulips magnolia tree and just about everything in my garden!?
I have a small orchard. I have tried human hair, smelly cheap soaps, fishing line around the property, with cans hung on it with a couple pebbles in them, a lot of things.
The most effective deterrent for a small area(like a 1 acre or less lot), is a proximity light arrangement, like you would mount on your garage. When something passes in front of it, the light goes on. I set up a couple of lights(Woods, avail at walmart for 40 bucks) to cross-fire my orchard. I took the bulb out of one, and put in a plug, so I could connect a radio. I set the timer on the light for 1 minute, and set the radio on the nastiest, loudest rock station I could find. GOODBYE DEER.
Hope this helps.
Reply:The problem with deer (or, actually, the reason for their stunning success) is that they are highly adaptable, and it doesn't take generations for them to adapt--it takes weeks.
You will find lots of suggestions (some are above) for keeping deer away--I've listed some below, too. But, deer will quickly figure out that there isn't any danger associated, and they will move in for the tasty treats anyway. You need to rotate solutions, and keep the deer confused!
Anyway, try any of these, at random:
Sprinkle cayenne pepper
Sprinkle moth balls
Fill a sprayer bottle with water, add chopped habanero peppers, with seeds, in a tied up nylon stocking--spray the plants with the pepper spray
Human hair
Have a dog owner save dog hair from brushing, and put that around your garden
Bath soap shavings
Blood meal (available at garden supply stores)
There are also commercial products (sprays) available to purchase.
The key is keeping the deer confused and thus, afraid. If you live within a city, call your animal control officer and see if he/she can offer any other advice. Sometimes, problem animals can be removed. If you live in the country, identify the landowner where the deer bed, and see if they will offer hunters permission this fall. Reducing the population reduces the pressure on the deer to wander into residential areas to eat!

There's a deer-resistant groundcover in each case to fill the bill.

Reply:Try human hair.Spread the hair close as you can to the plants or around the garden. The reason this works is because deer are afraid of humans and the hair has a strong scent of a human. You will be able to find lots of free human hair at the place you get your hair cut.I would recommend putting the hair in the lawn around the garden that way it wont look weird in the garden. You might even want to try placing the hair in something so it wont blow away then place these containers around the garden.
P.S. you will have to replace the hair regularly because it will at some time blow away and loose its scent.

What I do is take whole, fresh jalapenos and blend them up in a blender or food processor with water (just a little at first and make sure you don't get it in your eyes). after you have it blended really well, strain it to remove all solid pieces of jalapeno. Add water but not too much or you will over dilute it. Spray on plants every few days. This has worked for me ever since.

transported this 3 ft. tree from Mississippi to Texas. planted tree in full sunlight
Young magnolia tree that I planted about 6 months ago. what is causing the brown spots on the leaves?
During the fall time that type of tree has mold on it. The leaves will fall off soon and you will have brand new leaves in the springtime.
Reply:no water
Reply:Some spotting is normal for the Magnolia as it draws time for the leaves to drop. This is probably natural stress from transplanting or is possibly early stages of dying. You will be lucky if you are able to transplant this size unless it came with good rooting undisturbed in potting. It will need plenty of water.

What type of soil and fertilizer should I use and do they like full sun? I love Magnolia's and I want them to be beautiful.
I have 2 magnolia trees ready to be planted....?
There are a lot of different Magnolias. It would have been best if you could have identified the specific Magnolia you will be planting. Most Magnolias do best in full sun, especially if you want consistent flowering. Soil types vary by Magnolia species. Southern %26amp; Saucer Magnolia like an acidic, rich, well drained soil. Star Magnolia likes a peaty, organic based soil. Sweetbay Magnolia actually likes a wet, swampy, acidic soil. It is not recommended that you fertilize a newly transplanted tree for the first year. Here is a good article on the proper way to plant a tree: http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/hometips/tr...
Reply:They will get bigger than your two story house, and destroy your lawn around them. The leaves are highly alkalotic and take forever to rot, and even if you keep them cleaned up, they drip while on the tree. You might want to reconsider.

Can we move a magnolia tree that is about 12 feet tall?
ok i have been in the nursery work for over 20 years in warren co. tennessee and do not do as the guy above me says cutting the roots then waiting to dig it will let in fungus a 10 year old tree you will have to have a machine to dig it dont try this yourself need to wait till fall and have a machine to do this for you they will also replant to trust me me and my husband have been digging trees a long time and if you try this you are taking a chance of killing it.
Reply:Yes you can. But I would wait until this fall to do it. What you need to due about the end of August is root prune the tree. that means taking a flat spade and going around the perimeter of the tree at the drip line of the branches cutting all the roots. Then in late September find the spot you would like to move it to. Then dig a hole about twice the the size of the root ball on the tree and as deep as the roots of the tree now. Dig out your tree and move into the new place. Fill the sides of the hole with mixture of peat moss and clean top soil. Go to your garden shop and pick up a bottle of vitamin B-12 this will help with transplant shock. Water the tree for a couple of days while the weather is still warm-and stake it out to prevent it from falling over. Keep it well watered into the winter, fertilize the tree in late December, early January and when the spring starts to come around keep on eye on it for water needs . Or you can call a tree moving company this fall to due all the work for you.

Magnolia tree losing leaves?

Reply:Pare it's not at all convincing. Look at how Arwind Santos dominated Seigle, Eman and Villanueva in the first half. If Air 21 had that kind of depth they would have run through this team from start to finish. It's not the kind of thing (slow start) you expect from one of the best teams. What do you think of Magnolia beverage masters 1st game last night?
superb! team to beat!

I am moving house after Christmas and want to take my magnolia tree with me. Any suggestions?

Description of a magnolia tree? Anybody here a creative writer?
Good luck!

Flowers on magnolia tree?
I have flowers on my magnolia tree, unusual for this time of the year. I usually get flowers only in the spring before the leaves come out. Anyone knows the reason why? Thank you.

I agree with Scotkat. I have seen spring blooming Magnolias bloom off season due to stress. Likely by heat and drought.

Does anyone know how to get rid of flies and bees in a Magnolia tree?
as long as you have a flowering plant, you need bees to pollinate the flowers.

Add water but not too much or you will over dilute it. Spray on plants every few days. This has worked for me ever since.
